What is a Bully Stick?

Bully sticks are an all-natural, limited ingredient chew for dogs. They help satisfy the urge to chew, while being safe, healthy, and tasty! They are a natural, high-protein treat that is low in fat and calories. Bully sticks also help promote dental health by scraping away plaque and tartar while your dog chews!

So let’s take a closer look at what makes bully sticks such a great choice of chew!

What Exactly is a Bully Stick?

 Bully Sticks

Bully sticks, also known as pizzle sticks, are now an extremely popular chew for dogs. They are made from bull pizzle, and are most commonly sold as straight sticks, as rings, and can even be braided. Bully sticks are high in protein and fat, all-natural, and completely digestible. They don’t contain any artificial ingredients, making them a safe alternative to rawhide chews!

Puppies, middle-aged, and senior dogs alike enjoy chewing on bully sticks.

What are Bully Sticks Made of?

Bully sticks are made from the dried pizzle of a bull, in other words, dried and cured bull penis. That's right – a real bull’s you-know-what.

Did you know that the process of making a bully stick is actually quite similar to making beef jerky?

First, the bull's penis is cleaned and trimmed. Then, it's soaked in brine (a mixture of water and salt) for several days. After that, the bully stick is rinsed and dried in either an oven, a food dehydrator, or a smoker. This can take anywhere from 12 to 48 hours. Once it's fully dried, the bully stick is ready for your pup to enjoy!

Most commonly they are sold in 6", 12", 18" and 32" lengths, so they are usually cut down to size with a bandsaw.

Why Choose Bully Sticks over Rawhides for your Dog?

Bully sticks are an excellent alternative chew to rawhide chews, since rawhide can actually be very dangerous for dogs if swallowed. Many dogs actually prefer the taste of bully sticks to rawhide too, making them a great choice for picky pups!

They provide relief for pent-up energy in dogs – especially after having exercise – and also help promote healthy teeth and gums. Bully Sticks can be given whole or broken into smaller pieces for easier chewing.

Bully Sticks are somewhat hard, we would give them a six out of ten in terms of hardness, so many dogs are able to enjoy them. If you are looking for a stronger chew, we recommend our Himalayan Yak Snaks (Himalayan Yak Chews).

Bully sticks are a great all-natural treat that your dog will love!
